Trying to Build a Future When You Can’t Even Open a Bank Account

· 2 min read · 9 views

I just realized that in the current conditions, it is almost impossible to plan anything long term.

In January, I had a clear list for this year: get a residence permit in the EU, earn only in dollars or euros, run my own business, and get a startup visa.

What do I have now? Well, my income is in dollars, yes. Everything else has fallen apart.

Startup visa? 'Go fuck yourself, you are Russian' – that is the short version of the current stance of almost every startup program.

Residence permit in the EU? Almost the same story.

Run my own business? That is the worst part. 'Wise' decided to block all business accounts for companies where at least one shareholder resides in Russia. Both founders of Improvy OÜ have not lived in Russia since March 2021, but it is almost impossible to prove our current address. Of course I am trying, but Wise support is extremely slow, because I am far from the only one trying to save their business.

So I cannot really plan how to run my company when I am not even sure about the most basic thing: a working bank account.

What will I do next? It is complicated.

Right now I am finishing my project (Fullyst) and will launch it very soon. The questions with Wise and Stripe are still open, so everything depends on Wise's decision. As for an EU residence permit, I have to forget about it for now – unless I move on a work visa and sit in an office every day.

One more thing I realized: my situation is not the worst it could be. It is actually better than many others have it. So I just need to keep working and planning at least a few days ahead, instead of a whole year like before.

P.S. As you can see, I decided to use this channel as a personal blog and renamed it.
